United Way of Greater Lorain County Seeks New Chief Executive Officer

The United Way of Greater Lorain County, seeks to hire a proven leader as its new Chief Executive Officer. The position reports to the Chair and Board of Directors and will provide strong, innovative collaborative leadership for the United Way organization in developing financial resources and identifying and responding to community needs. This position will create and build awareness of the United Way's role in the community and assure involvement of its diverse constituencies. In addition, the CEO will maintain accountability for the overall operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the policies set by the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in and be responsible for:


Leadership – Developing the financial resources to help meet the needs of the community as well as establishing financial development goals with the board of directors. Developing creative strategies and plans for achieving financial goals and assure appropriate staffing of the campaign structure. Maintaining a leadership role among United Way's constituencies, including chairing or playing a key role in committees/task forces that deal with significant community issues. Assisting in the recruitment and development of a board of directors representative of the entire community. Fostering the development of a common vision for the United Way among volunteers, staff, human service providers, and the community.


Policy Development/Planning – Working with the board to identify and initiate appropriate issues requiring policy decisions/actions and assure implementation. Leading staff and volunteers in the development and execution of short- and long-range planning.


Management/Administrative – Staffing the organization with fully competent diverse professionals. Promoting continued professional development among staff, including demonstrating and assuring cultural competency of the team. Creating an atmosphere that fosters the development of strong, effective teams and empowers staff through involvement and participation in decision making. Managing and directing the activities of professional staff consistent with the concept of the "full-service" United Way. Enhancing the public awareness, understanding and support of community needs through coordinated marketing and communications of programs. Identifying appropriate role(s) for United Way in assessing and addressing community needs; serving as a community catalyst in addressing the changing or emerging service needs, delivery systems and population groups. Enhancing the capabilities of affiliated agencies to respond to local community needs and to manage their organizations effectively.


Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred
  • 5+ years in leading an organization, minimum $2M-$5M annual revenues
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working or volunteering in not-for-profit organization(s)
  • Proven financial management, program development, staff management/development, strategic planning, and demonstrated growth (revenue, profit, fundraising)
  • Track record of change; seeks creative and innovative solutions

  • Communicates effectively – speaks clearly and expresses self well in groups and in one-on-one conversations. Is an excellent writer. Listens well. Encourages the open expression of ideas and opinions. Delivers clear convincing, and well-organized presentations. Promotes a free flow of information throughout the organization.
  • Builds relationships: Interpersonal, Agency, Community - establishes open, trusting, and candid working relationships with all stakeholders, including agencies. Treats all individuals fairly and with respect. Demonstrates personal commitment to diversity objectives. Deals constructively with conflicts and disagreements. Builds consensus. Presents a credible image to the community as head of the United Way.
  • Champions strategic perspective – understands the changing social, competitive, economic, and giving environment faced by the United Way. Develops innovative approaches to meet the challenges of this new environment. Melds these approaches into an overall strategic plan. Acts as a catalyst for needed change and stimulates staff, volunteers, and the community to accept and implement new initiatives.

  • The compensation package is competitive and commensurate with relevant experience.
