Caring Heart Award Winner: Maria Zolli

Jerry Skully, Executive Director of United Way & Maria Zolli
The “Caring Heart Award” is given in honor of a person who is the United Way of Greater Lorain County's Volunteer of the Year. This person characterizes the “HEART” of our mission which is caring for those in need. The Caring Heart Award was presented at United Way of Greater Lorain County’s Campaign Celebration event on Wednesday, March 26, 2008. This year’s winner is Maria I. Zolli.

Her service to the community has been demonstrated over and over through her efforts of working with the United Way. Maria has been a good-will ambassador of the United Way for the past 10 years working tirelessly to promote the United Way to ANYONE that will listen to her.

In addition to being generous in sharing her time, expertise and insight with United Way, Maria is equally a generous donor and her love for the United Way is obvious. She has come full circle with the United Way. She has served on our campaign cabinet, she has participated in our focus group sessions, she has been a member of our Board of Directors and she has served on our Allocations panels determining where the funds should go. There isn’t anything Maria wouldn’t do for the United Way. She is a true trooper.

Maria has made many personal sacrifices without regard to her own personal recognition. She willingly gives of her own time when she sees that an organization, not just the United Way is in need of help. In fact, she has also visited, promoted and worked with many United Way funded organizations in Lorain County.

Maria does this in balance with the many demands on her time that all mothers, fathers, wife’s and husbands have. She expects and asks nothing in return, however, she is always the first to express her thanks and acknowledge the contributions of others.

Maria is truly a role model for United Way, her care and concern for others is genuine. Her unselfish and enthusiastic attitude is contagious and encourages others to act in a similar manner. Maria is really a great individual who does not even consider herself as anything special…BUT WE ALL KNOW BETTER.

Her husband Alex gave the following quote:

“Maria’s To Do List in life is truly all about others. She has yet to say no to a worthy cause and this is amazing. When you talk about giving back to the community, she talks the talk and walks the walk.”

Below is a list of the other organizations that keeps her very active.

  1. She is the past President of the Lorain County Medical Auxiliary
  2. She sat on the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Developmental Center from the 1980s through 1990s
  3. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees at Community Health Partner’s Foundation for two terms.
  4. She is a Leadership Lorain County Alumna.
  5. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees and the Leadership Council for Leadership Lorain County.
  6. She is the recipient of the Community Leadership Award from Leadership Lorain County.
  7. She is currently Co-Chairperson of the “Keep the Light Shining” fundraiser for Lorain County Lighthouse.
  8. She has served as the chairperson for the American Cancer Society’s Life Saver’s Ball for 17 consecutive years with a net profit of over $1,100,000.
  9. AND we are sure this has to be her greatest accomplishment - - - - -She was the first woman to serve as Campaign Chair for the United Way of Greater Lorain County.

As you can see Maria leaves very little time for herself…..and that’s why we treasure her so at the United Way.
