Julia Landreth's Success Story

Julia is an active 3 ½ year old little girl, but that was not always the case. She was born prematurely at 31 weeks and weighed only 2 pounds. She did not have any obvious medical problems other than being small. After 6 ½ weeks of hospitalization, we were able to bring Julia home. Around 8 months old, Julia began to display some noticeable delays in motor development. We were referred to the Children's Developmental Center by our family physician. Julia was evaluated and placed in weekly physical therapy. At 22 months of age, she finally began to walk. She is still seen in physical therapy, but she is now walking and running, and Kendra, her physical therapist is helping her to develop her other motor skills.

At 2 ½, Julia was still not talking very much. Since she was already being seen at the Center, it made sense that she have her speech evaluated, as well. After ruling out a hearing problem, Julia was placed in the Center's "Let's Start Talking" Program. Being in this program, which is a group program, let Julia interact with other children and was an excellent way for her to learn to talk. Once she finished the group program, she started individual therapy with Nicholl. In the last year, her language has continued to expand and she is talking more and more everyday! She can now express herself in short sentences.

Julia also had some fine motor problems and worked with Mary in Occupational therapy. Julia was having some real problems with her eating. She had some sensory issues and was a very picky eater. Julia was seen with some other children in a small feeding group that was run by Mary and Nicholl. These groups worked on a lot of things, including helping the children get used to more varieties of foods. The children have fun trying new foods and at the same time, lose the sensory issues that may have been interfering with their eating. Now Julia is beginning to eat more types of foods.

Julia will be old enough for the Speech Camp held at the Center every summer and she is excited about attending. We have used several of the services provided at the Children's Developmental Center, and we are very glad that such a place exists in Lorain County. We want to thank the Center and United Way for helping Julia!
