United Way Impact Areas

Strengthening Families

Why it is important:

To enhance the quality of family life and to strengthen families as well as individuals. This Impact area offers a range of programs that support families as nurturers, caretakers and instructors. These program components empower family/family members to function to the highest degree possible.

  • Promote positive peer influences for youthful family members
  • Empower individuals to take ownership of their personal health
  • Allow seniors to keep active and to live well, independently
  • Provide nutritious meals to seniors
  • Provide parent education to prevent child abuse and neglect
  • Provide employment development opportunities
  • Provide access to quality and affordable substance abuse treatment and counseling

Nurturing Children

Why it is important:

To ensure that every child be provided a healthy, safe, nurturing, learning environment. To provide assistance in developing assets and protective factors that are proven to reduce those risk factors in their environment.

For example, your support of the United Way's Community Impact Fund will…

  • Provide quality, safe childcare services that emphasize early intervention
  • Promote life skill training and character-building education
  • Provide youth violence intervention services
  • Provide outcome-based youth development and leadership programs
  • Provide youth with activities that will encourage constructive use of their time, interests and talents

Caring For Basic Needs

People in Crisis

Why it is important:

To ensure that all people living in the Greater Lorain County community can meet their basic needs for safety, adequate food, daily subsistence, access to safe and affordable shelter, crisis intervention and other situations requiring emergency assistance.

For example, your support of the United Way's Community Impact Fund will…

  • Maintain safe and affordable shelter for individuals and families
  • Maintain the adequacy of the food supply for individuals and families
  • Provide strong and effective case management, advocacy and crisis intervention
  • Provide emergency assistance and disaster aid

Greatest Needs

Why it is important:

To ensure that those most in need of assistance in maintaining physical and mental well being and accessing those resources which are critical for sustaining subsistence, independence, self sufficiency and quality of life standards.

  • Improve individual and family functioning through therapy, counseling or casework
  • Increase access to support services for those experiencing a critical human service need
  • Increase the community, social and emotional support opportunities for persons with disabilities
  • Reduce physical, social and emotional isolation of persons with disabilities or other human barriers

Save These Dates:
United Way's 2008-10 fund distribution application process opens September 1, 2007 and closes on October 31, 2007. Healthy Agency application packets will be available online during that time at www.loraincountyunitedway.org. Healthy Agency applications will be due back at the United Way office on October 31, 2007 by 4:00 PM.
