Did you know...the Arthritis Foundation offers an arthritis workplace program?
The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter has developed a new workplace educational program, Working Successfully with Arthritis, to educate employers and employees about arthritis and its impact on the nation's work force. Arthritis accounts for more than 70 million lost workdays each year, and about 500 million days of restricted activity. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, costing our economy more than $86 billion in lost wages, lost productivity, and medical expenses.
Working Successfully with Arthritis is a free presentation designed for executives, managers, human resource specialists, and employees. Perfectly suited for a brown bag lunch event, this 60 minute presentation includes a brief video, a speaker, and a Q&A session. Information on arthritis diagnosis, treatment options, and simple lifestyle changes are offered to help proactively educate attendees. Every attendee will receive a packet of free educational literature.
Once thought of as an "elder" disease, arthritis is being diagnosed in younger people, in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, and that can impact their employability, income, and economic self-sufficiency.
Ergonomics plays a role in the control of arthritis in the workplace. Those who work at a computer should consider the back support of their chair, the angle of the computer screen, the height of the keyboard, and the importance of taking occasional breaks. Proper lifting techniques, an awareness of the weight of materials lifted, correct posture, and joint strain all have a bearing on avoiding injury.
Working Successfully with Arthritis underwritten by a grant from the Key Foundation, is the next generation of the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter's economic self-sufficiency project, established in 2003.
