Success Story - YWCA and Cheryl
She had a good life, with a job and family by her side, but as a single mother of a teenaged daughter, Cheryl found herself going down the path of heavy drug use, unsuccessful treatments, legal trouble and eventually the loss of her job, home & daughter. She even did prison time, but it just didn't work to get her back on track with a stable life. It was in 2003 that Cheryl was referred to the YWCA of Elyria Women's Campus Project.
It was at the YWCA that she progressed through a structured program of counseling, goal setting, financial literacy & life skills that allowed her to emerged through all the “wreckage” of her past to become the successful woman and mother that she is today. Her case manager helped her manage her budget and she was able to pay off her court fines and get her license. Cheryl credits the Y for pushing her to constantly “prove” herself. It inspired her motivation to become a better person.
Today, Cheryl is now a state certified counselor's assistant and volunteers weekly at the Y. She says that by continuing to give back, it re-ignites her passion for success & independence. She also has her own apartment and a nurturing relationship with her daughter.
