What does the agency do: The mission of the Volunteer Guardianship Program of Lorain County is to enhance the quality of life of indigent, incompetent, older adults in Lorain County by providing trained, qualified volunteer legal guardians to serve as concerned, caring advocated and surrogate decision-makers when no less restrictive alternative to guardianship is available.

- In 2005 United Way allocation totaled $15,254.00.
- In 2004, 12 guardianships were granted.
- 2004 ending caseload of guardianships was 37.
- The VGP does not consider this a numbers game. It is very important to use guardianship as a last resort after exhausting all other options.
- Many guardianships granted are patients in nursing facilities who have no family and are unable to make health care decisions for themselves due to incompetence. –Criteria: are 55 or over, indigent, without family to provide the service and a resident of Lorain County.
- 27 volunteers completed 1,208 volunteer hours of service in 2004.
- 3 volunteers have served for 12 years.
- 3 new volunteers trained to be a guardian in 2004.
- VGP began in 1993 in Lorain County.
- VGP is a program under the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry.
- 9 Volunteer attorneys assist the program with support to volunteers and legal fillings.
- Non-Profit 501(c) agency.
- A new provider of United Way since July 2003.
- VGP is a member of the Ohio Guardianship Association.
- VGP is the only program in Lorain County offering volunteer guardianship services.
